The Different Halves Of Lanzarote

Lanzarote is very much an island of two halves. With the south dedicated to tourism whilst the north remains largely unsullied by development. Despite the fact that this Canary Island receives millions of tourist guests every year. Thanks largely to local planning laws which have carefully contained construction and restricted it to the south. Lanzarote´s two separate faces become obvious when you begin to tour the island. All of the accommodation such as Lanzarote holiday villas, hotels, apartments are concentrated in the three main holiday resorts. Whilst the northern half is largely the preserve of local residents. And where agriculture still plays a very prominent role. There is a good range of holiday apartments in Lanzarote so finding something suitable should not be a problem even if you are very choosy.

This other side of the island can be easily discovered by driving away from Puerto del Carmen along the LZ1 in the direction of the airport and the capital city of Arrecife. Take the ring road which skirts past this conurbation and then the junction for Tahiche. The gateway to the north of the island, as well as the location of the former home and studio of the famous local artist César Manrique. Who built an incredible edifice here over the empty bubbles in the lava flow. A sight which is well worth making a stop off for.

After exploring the César Manrique Foundation there are two routes to choose from. One of these goes in the direction of Tahiche, which was the capital of the island until 1852 and which as a result boasts loads of great old architecture. Whilst the other option basically skirts the coast until reaching the atmospheric former fishing village of Arrieta. Which is the best beach spot on this part of the island. This is also a good place to enjoy lunch as there are two decent restaurants right on the beach here.

If you are simply interested in a beach vacation then chances are that you will miss out on most of the islands attractions as being in the north a little travelling will be required.

If you haven’t booked a car then there is a good availability of tours and excursions to the northern part of the island , which is hardly surprising as this is where most of Lanzarote’s attractions will be found.

The south of the island is a total contrast to the north. It is dominated by volcanic scenery and lava scapes which were created by eruptions in the 18th century. The 300 odd volcanoes here are all now dormant but this whole area remains a real tourist hot spot as hundreds of thousands of visitors tour the area every year.
