Acropolis of Lindos – A Location Worth Seeing in Rhodes Island, Greece

The 4th century BC temple devoted to goddess Athena, Acropolis of Lindos is situated on Rhodes Island. It is a famous site on Rhodes Island and is visited by many tourists during Rhodes Holidays. To access the site, you can walk on foot or else avail Lindos Taxi (Donkeys).

History:

According to traditional views the religious group that worshiped goddess Athena Lindia was pre-Hellenic but this is not supported by some findings. This site dates back to the 9th century.

1. Theatre:

The Theatre near the Acropolis of Lindos is situated below the Athena Temple on the south-western side of the hill. The theatre is a circular auditorium and orchestra for the audiences. The honorary seats and proedries for officials around the orchestra are present even today. The place above auditorium’s diazoma and above that place carries 7 and 19 seats respectively. The theatre could accommodate about eighteen hundred spectators at a time.

2. Four-Portico Building:

Another place to see in the Acropolis of Lindos during Rhodes Holidays is the Four-Portico Building. A slanting roof is supported by four columns on all four sides and surrounding a small open air square. North-Western portion of a row of columns possessing slab over it, is the entrance of Four-Portico infrastructure. The building was mostly used for religious functions and ceremonies in the past.

3. Tomb of Kleoboulos:

Belonging to a wealthy dynasty, the tomb of Kleoboulos is a circular infrastructure. It has masonry and a domed roof. Beautiful moulding of plaster and Palmettes make its entrance more attractive.

The wall paintings and the Ayios Aimilianos name give evidence that it was converted to a Christian church later.

4. Boukopion:

The north-eastern part of Acropolis carries an altar called Boukopion. One can find about thirty eight writings on rocks that help recognizing the place.

5. The Archokrateion:

The surroundings of Acropolis carries a number of cemeteries. One of the important funerary monuments is the Archokrateion. Towards the hill west side of Acropolis and in the surrounding area of Kampana at Krana you will find a rock cut tomb.

The exterior part of Archokrateion is divided into two stories. The top and ground floors possess various pillars supporting blind openings and slabs with triglyphs and metopes respectively.

On the ground floor there are funerary religious structures having the name inscribed on the bases. To acces the place of performing burial rituals, you are advised to travel through the indoor road. There are about nineteen graves cut into the chamber walls. On your entrance to the hall, you will find pillars alternated with the panels of plaster.

The modern name of the place suggests that it was a church during the medieval times. Apart from various other sites in the Acropolis of Lindos, this place is also worth seeing.
